The critically acclaimed memoir of award-winning author and poet, Ann Carbine Best.

When Ann Carbine marries Larry Best in the Salt Lake temple in 1961, she's certain their marriage will last forever. Eleven years later, she learns that he's been having affairs with men. Devastated by the revelation, Ann feels betrayed and abandoned. She still loves Larry and wants to save their marriage. However, powerful emotions pull Larry away from his family, just as AIDS is beginning its relentless march through the gay community. As a single parent, Ann is faced with four grieving children who don't want to leave their father and their home in Utah. But Ann needs to start a new life in a new place. In the beautiful Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, she at last makes peace with the past.

"This skillfully written page -turner. . . is a courageous memoir of loss and pain. . . ." ~Maureen Derrick Keeler, Professor of English & Literature.

"This moving, inspiring, and candid memoir is a simply told yet eloquent story of a woman whose mortal journey takes her through a series of life-shattering crises, each of which could break any one of us." ~Richard H. Cracroft, author, editor and Chair, BYU English Department

In the Mirror A Memoir of Shattered Secrets edition by Ann Carbine Best Health Fitness Dieting eBooks

This powerful book is a story that proves that you never truly can totally know what goes on behind closed doors or in closed hearts. Ann Carbine Best tells the heartbreaking tale of a faithful Latter-Day Saint woman, who is married in the Mormon Temple to the love of her life, not for "until death do you part" but for time and all eternity. She is a woman who is determined to keep her marriage together, no matter what the cost. When her husband finally confesses the truth of a secret life of multiple homosexual relationships, her life is shattered, yet her unwavering commitment to her marriage doesn't stop. She is brutally honest about her very human need to be loved and admired by a man, and bravely shows her own vulnerabilities in naked detail. Although I can't begin to fathom some of her choices, I totally understood her motives and needs.

Shortly after her husband's revelation, two of their daughters are involved in a near-deadly car accident, severely injuring one, and leaving the other in critical condition with a traumatic brain injury. This part of Ann's book is a masterful tale of heartbreak, pain, unwavering faith, and heavenly miracles.

Soul-shattering trials continue, and yet Ann never wavers in her deep faith or Herculean mental, emotional, or physical strength.

I can't recommend this book highly enough. The Lord truly loves broken vessels, and Ann's story proves that even the most shattered ones can be glued back together without a single crack through the power of the Lord's magnificent atonement.

Ann is a masterful writer and storyteller. I couldn't turn the pages fast enough.

In the Mirror A Memoir of Shattered Secrets edition by Ann Carbine Best Health Fitness Dieting eBooks Reviews

This honest and thoughtfully written Memoir "In the Mirror A Memoir of Shattered Secrets" by Ann Carbine Best recalls her long difficult marriages with two very different men, motherhood, and the challenges of caring for a disabled daughter.

Ann married her first husband Larry in the Mormon temple in 1961, they were married for over 11 years, had four children. Ann was stunned when Larry confessed his affairs with other men. In spite of their efforts to work through his gay orientation with the help of church counsel, he fell in love with another man and left his family. Ann's understandable confusion over this ordeal, and her attempts to reconcile this with her family life and Mormon faith was heartbreaking. It was unfortunate she didn't allow herself time to heal, lacking confidence in herself (after profound marital rejection), she quickly remarried following her divorce. Her second husband, Tom, an alcoholic, was so obviously wrong for her, it was practically unbelievable. Ann's life situation didn't improve when her daughter was injured/disabled in a serious car accident. Ann didn't want her daughter kept in a facility, so Ann became her caregiver in her own home.

Ann bravely faced heartbreak, and not so easy life circumstances without complaint or bitterness. She allowed visits with Larry and his partner, showing forgiveness and an acceptance of their shared family life. Ann was also committed to Tom, and didn't abandon him when his health declined from his alcoholism. Although this was an incredibly sad story, a seemingly long book, I'm glad this story was told, it was a good one.

Many thanks to for the promotional copy.
I felt this story was the author's attempt to relate what happened during her life and to reflect back on some of her poor decisions. And who of us can't relate to poor choices.

That being said, the story was interesting but at times felt unconnected and even out of order. It also lacked the deep emotion and reasons for her choices that most readers would need to make the story more meaningful. I would've loved for her to have shared more about her amazing daughter, Jen. There were several grammatical errors, but not enough to disrupt the story.

All in all, I don't regret reading this story, but it felt more like the skeleton of a good book. And it lacked the inspiration that many times makes a memoir great.
This book is 230+ pages of a gripping, real life story...

I don't ever read more than 15 pages in one day. But I managed to read all 200+ on my app in one day.

Excellent story. Others writing the review may recap the plot better than myself. Basically Ann is a great writer who writes not plainly, but poignantly in a straightforward prose about her life as an LDS member in the church and how she married another church member who kept a secret from her for the first decade of their marriage. Larry (her husband) then reveals that he is bi-sexual- which becomes Anne's first personal life trial. When that marriage dissolved in life (but not in her mind) she meets another man with his own daemons of being an alcoholic and marries him- her 2nd personal life trial. Her 3rd longest trial is when her two daughters get into an auto accident and she is then left to take care one of them for life.

The plot of Ann's life is quite unbelievable... but the way she articulates it is as brilliant. She recaps the trials in a humble fashion, but the trials have been more than any one person would wish on themselves.

At first, outsiders of the LDS faith will think this is going to be a cult story... and that's the first twist... its a non LDS bashing story.

Secondly, we think this is a story about female empowerment... that's the 2nd twist.. its not completely a feminist story though it talks about the trials many single mothers endure everyday.

There are so many twists in this book which fundamentally changes everyone's perspective about their personal trials and beliefs through the story's emotionally codependent heroine, Ann Best.

In the Mirror is a story ANYONE can relate to (adultery, mental illness, depression, alcoholism, infidelity, life stealing illnesses/accidents, being afraid of life, etc.) ... but what many may not relate to is the silent power Anne Best has in her personal faith in life to endure such tragedies.
